COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Computer hardware, software, and related technology
and their uses in and impact on society and education: hands-on
experience with applications software, instructional software,
and classroom management tools.
MAJOR GOAL:
Students will become familiar with the uses
of computers in education and comfortable with using common applications
software on microcomputers.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The student will demonstrate familiarity with:
1. Computer vocabulary and terminology.
2. Computer hardware --- microcomputers, printers, monitors,
scanners, projection devices, etc.
3. Computer operating systems, their functions and utilities.
4. Computer application tools: word processors, spreadsheets,
data bases, presentation software
5. Use of general applications tools for accomplishing educational
objectives.
6. Computer Assisted Instruction: integrating the computer into
teaching and learning.
7. Selecting, locating, evaluating and using educational software
to meet specific needs in the classroom.
8. Selecting and using computing equipment to meet specific educational
problems.
9. Computer literacy requirements in schools. Programming languages
used in the schools.
10. Telecommunications: electronic mail, the uses of telecommunications
in the classrooms. Web Browsers.
11. Computer graphics and visual communication.
12. Ethics and equity issues in computer technology in education.
New and expected future developments.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Students are expected to attend ALL class
sessions. Absences may result in lowering of grade.
Do all lab assignments, get passing grade
on tests. Students must do the work that they turn in themselves.
Turning in work done by another person will result in an automatic
F.
KNOWLEDGE BASE FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:
The theme Preparation for Education of
Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Populations in Urban Schools
has been adopted by the faculty of the School of Education as
the structure or scaffolding for the preparation of professional
educators at Cal. State, LA. In this course, content regarding
the above is found in the lecture topics and assignments of Weeks
1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10.
REQUIRED TEXT:

Teachers. Brown and Benchmark.
REQUIRED MATERIALS:
Three 3 1/2 inch Double sided diskettes and
two Scantrons: Form 882.

Course Schedule:
Readings should be done prior to class. Always bring your computer diskettes to class.
Week 1 Introduction: overview of course, uses, resources at Cal State LA, class obligations.
Types of computers (mainframes, minis, and micros) essential components, peripherals and software generations, binary numbers, bits, bytes, logic, operating systems, programming systems, languages.
